Getting Prepared

To prepare you want to measure the floor so that you know how much paint you will need. Before buying your paint you should have a really good idea of how you want it to look when you are done. For example, decide on the finish that you prefer. While a high gloss finish is easy to take care of, it can also be very slippery. However, if you do opt for a glossy finish, you will want to use a good quality urethane product. If you want less of sheen, then you may want to select an acrylic latex paint. It is a little less slippery and a little less shiny. You will also have the choice of latex or oil base paint. While oil base is probably more durable, latex paint dries much quicker.

Prepping the Surface

Before you start painting you want to make sure that you prepare the surface of the floor that you are planning to paint. Make sure that it is spotless. Any dirty or greasy spots will not hold the paint properly, so make sure that the floor is squeaky clean. If the floor has been painted before you should probably clean it with TSP and remove any flaking paint. Lightly sand to improve adhesion, and sweep up any sanding dust. Once the floor is really clean, make sure that you let it dry completely. Then just before painting sweep one last time and dust mop to remove the tiny bits of residual dust.

Quality Primer

Before you ever paint a floor, you will want to prime the entire area first. Use a roller with a long handle to apply a thin, even coat of paint, and make sure to let it dry completely before painting it. Priming your floor surface allows the new paint to make a solid bond with the existing surface. If you are planning to paint a new concrete surface, make sure that you let it cure for about six months. Use muriatic acid to etch a new concrete floor before painting it for the first time to make sure that the paint sticks correctly. Again, after treating with the acid make sure that the surface is completely dry before applying your first layer of primer to it. When selecting your primer and paint, make sure that you have the right product for the surface that you are painting, because paint formulations are very specific to the surface which they will cover.

Final Coat

Once your primer is dry, now comes the fun part. Apply your color layer of finish paint. Again use the extension pole and a roller and make sure that the first coat was completely dry before beginning the second coat, so that your paint will always adhere correctly. Let the floor dry and harden before walking or placing furniture on it.

Here we are going to try and recreate a piece of canvas art based on the New York City skyline. First we need to create a nice dramatic backdrop for our cityscape, this can be any colour you want however if I’m doing a sunset cityscape skyline then I’d normally use sunset orange, reds and black.

Start with neat orange from the top of the canvas working down towards the centre of the canvas in red making a notable blend and change in tones. From the horizon work from red and work towards the base of the canvas adding a little black to darken the red eventually you should get to pure black as you approach the bottom of the canvas. So in short you have a canvas that is orange blending into red blending into black. If you need to practice the blending method a few times use an old spare canvas if you have one. Once painted allow to dry completely before moving onto phase two.

Adding the Skyscrapers

Now the fun part begins. Adding skyscrapers is done by using a mix of 1 part red to 1 part black. Using an nice square 1 inch brush load the bristles and work from the top of the building by dragging downwards to the base. Load the brush again and repeat the process working from slightly different heights until you have a nice skyline of buildings in a twilight effect almost. Allow to dry before moving onto phase 3.

Adding Details & Lights

We now need to add some life to your cityscape painting. Using touches from white, red, yellow and orange add small light sources resembling windows to your buildings. Keep adding until you’re happy with the level of lighting to your buildings, you can add some small yellow touches to the base to resemble lamppost lighting and moving traffic. Allow to dry and sign.

In all cases, painting contractors should be protecting windows and furnishings from any contact with paint, so be sure to inquire how your contractor plans to do that.  Ruined carpets and windows with paint on the glass are things you should never have to deal with.

Your house painting estimate will also depend on your choice of paint.  This includes both the quality of the paint and the color.  Obviously, the best quality materials will cost more.  Decide in advance if you want a cut-rate job, or a first-class one.  Then be sure that quotes are for similar quality paints and the exact same colors.  

Painting contractors will know if the job will require one coat of paint, or multiple coats.  If you are trying to hold costs down, choose a paint color which is the same as the old color.  Painting white over white may involve only a single application, but painting a light color over a dark one may require three coats.  Since you will be paying for each coat of paint, be prepared for the cost.

But we have always paid a price for this activity. Paints have always contained poisons and toxins that not only pollute the environment but the air within a home.
