Hearts of Therapy Captured in Paint
Posted on January 17th, 2010 No commentsPrehistoric men painted animals for many reasons. Is it so strange that present day Artists are serious about capturing animals in their artwork? Painting different species seems to be an inherited trait for some and Laura Barbosa is no exception.
What does this have to do with “Hearts of Therapy”? Everything… if we take the time to see what is going on right in front of our eyes we would notice that our beloved dogs are more than just primitive canines and capable guards. They are therapy dogs with a heart whom are doing great work in our local community and have been featured in 3 giant paintings which are gaining much popularity and raising awareness for a local community concerned with health and healing.
In 2007 Laura Barbosa had been previously published in an article written by Zach Patberg in the Asbury Park Press of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in NJ entitled: “Art Of The Dog”
Ms. Barbosa has been working on 3-24″high x 48″wide acrylic paintings on canvas featuring 12 life size working therapy dogs of various breeds that currently work in our local community hospitals, nursing homes, psychiatric facilities, schools and other locations in Ocean County NJ where emotional service dogs are indispensable.
“I hope to help the patients heal through my artworks! The dogs in this painting are well known in our local facilities and visit the very patients who will be viewing the originals and whom love the dogs dearly and count on them to boost their moral, help them heal and lower their blood pressure.”
Laura’s idea was to present a local facility with these works of art in hopes of raising money for The Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs, Inc. The Community Medical Center in Toms River NJ was chosen by the Artist because they totally support the use of Therapy Dogs in their Hospice, Oncology, Pediatric and Out Patient Programs. As of February 28, 2008 The Community Medical Center purchased the three works of art. The permanent display will begin March 2008.
“The idea was to create Beautiful Uplifting Artworks for the hospital and to increase public awareness to help diminish the existing breed specific stereotypes. The original paintings are priced at $2500 each and donations will be sent to The Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dog organization to help keep these special canines in our facilities!.”
In conclusion, most will be surprised to see what types of dogs are included in these paintings! The most scrutinized and misunderstood are among the breeds on display. These paintings are more than just beautiful artwork, they make an important statement and are meant to educate the public and try to eliminate stereotypical prejudices against certain breeds of dogs in our society. The Art of Laura Barbosa Website
Seeing into the soul and realizing a unique personality through expression moves me towards my own style of painting, helping me to create animal portraits that are alive and vibrant. Although animals are my first love, I also live in a colorful world of abstract art, new wave digital images and surreal representations of nature and life, which allow the viewer to create their own conclusions and individual meanings from my artworks that are all their own…Laura Barbosa
Biography:
Laura Barbosa’s paintings have been exhibited in group shows in galleries including The Splash Contemporary Gallery in Asbury Park, NJ and The Stover Mill Gallery and Tinicum Arts Festivals in Erwinna, PA.
In addition, her work is on permanent display in a public collection at the Community Medical Center on Route 37 in Toms River, NJ.
Ms. Barbosa is also a part of the creation team and a participating artist in “The Glory of Horses” traveling Mural which will be touring the US and Europe for a period of three years……………………………………

Protect Your Art Work- Everything You Need to Know About Caring for Art
Posted on October 27th, 2009 No commentsThe aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life. “ ~William Faulkner. I’m sure when Faulkner made this profound statement he was not referring to storage, framing and displaying techniques that make sure your art work moves again a century later. I guess though, his reference to “artificial means” could be stretched to encompass conservation methods. If only I could alter Ben Jonson’s famous quote “Art hath an enemy called ignorance” and switch the word ignorance to UV rays and humidity!
If you own pieces of art worth more than the frame they’re set in then you should know that your art collection can deteriorate in quality and loose its value over time if not protected.Care for your original art prints starts long before you buy it, which is why it is imperative to ask the seller the materials that were used in making and conserving the piece and where and how the art was stored- especially, if you’re buying from an online seller and not directly from a gallery.
From initial research before buying to transportation, storage, framing and hanging, special care will ensure integrity and longevity of your art piece.
After you have purchased the art work you need to figure out transportation:
When packing and shipping your art, it’s important to find materials that will provide maximum protection during their journey. If your art piece is an unusual size or dimension, you might need to have a custom box made. Sometimes art stores will give you one. There are specialty shipping companies that handle rare and costly goods and you pay a premium for their handling abilities. They have special wrapping and packaging materials depending on the medium and size of your art. Check on the covered insurance if your piece is valuable.
Once delivered you need to store it before framing or mounting:

I've been denying the artist inside me for too long. It seems to be that no mater what I do in life, things always bring me back to my Art. I love it, I enjoy it, it defines me. At the moment I'm just following my dreams, doing what I love...
Painting has always been a long time hobby of mine, but over the past couple of years it has been something I've found myself doing more and more and I've given a lot of my work away without documenting it, so a lot of it is lost in the sands of time... With the site I'm hoping to get a lot more exposure and feedback on my work which will help me to grow and develop further as an artist. All comments and critiques are welcome!
